History and Religion
As far back as old, Bonism, the pre-Buddhist religion of Tibet uses to be the largest belief system and religion in the region which is called Bhutan today. Buddhism was introduced in the 7th century. The first leader to recognize Buddhism in the region was the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. This was further strengthened upon the arrival of Guru Rimpoche, a Buddhist Master. The majority consider Guru Rimpoche as the Second Buddha. Currently, The Land of the Drukpas is a democracy and is dedicated to upholding the rights of its citizens.
Among the various things you would learn when you visit Bhutan is the meaning of Driglam Namzha which is the traditional code of etiquette accepted widely as a norm of societal behavior. Respect for not only one another but also the land which we live in is what this code teaches and these are basic tenants which are practiced by many people around the world. For example, certain cultural practices such as allowing elders to eat first, putting on proper clothing as a sign of respect for yourself, etc. These tenants are very valued in Bhutan. When you arrive, it will mean a lot if you also abided by Driglam Namzha.
As recently as 1961 all entry into Bhutan was still on horseback. Druk-yul, the land of the thunder dragon is only just emerging from the mists of its self-imposed isolation. The last Shangril-La is an exotic land of high mountains and lush valleys, snow clad peaks with clear running springs, a pristine ecology, and an incredible wealth of wildlife.
Mask Dances and Colours
Enjoy annual festival of Bhutan where people come in their finest dress. A real time for family get-together, witness mask dances performed by monks and laymen, and to receive religious blessings. It is also the time where age old enormous sacred religious painting called Thongrol are in display for an hour or two.
Trekking in the Himalayas
Enjoy the time with nature and crisp air. The treks will go through pristine forest where you will hardly meet people except for murmuring winds. Being above the river sources and walking over hight passes provides with a sense of achievement and satisfaction. Above all it provides with an environment aloof from distractions.
